Birds of all shapes and sizes!
Camera: Canon Eos R8
Lens: Canon RF100-400 F5.6-8
For this post I wanted to take the time to identify each species! I hope I got them all correct!
This first one is simple since I already know what this one is! The Canada Goose! Not a bird you want to upset, they can have quite the temper, one hissed at me when I came too close to a nest. For the most part so long as you respect their warnings they are peaceful birds, very large too!
I love how these ones look so villainous, like they have some grand heist planned! These are called Great Cormorants, in these you can tell apart the male and female by the males much darker neck and little tuft of fuzz on the head! Not sure if that’s always the case with the fuzz, may have just been a quirk of this one in particular. They dive below the water to catch fish, its very fun to watch!
This is either a Gray Heron or a Great Blue Heron, I’m not confident in my bird identification skills to say one or the other yet! I felt a little bad taking these photos, he started standing peacefully on the shore enjoying the sunrise and I accidentally startled him into flying ontop of a light pole! Such a giant bird to perch up there like that! I love the tall birds like these ones, they seem so out of place around the ducks and geese!
This goofy little guy is a Snowy Egret! I rarely see these ones but I adore how silly their proportions are!
This one is just a simple Mourning Dove! They are super common here, but this one came up right beside me as I sat and watched the birds so it deserved a photo too!
These are Ring-necked Ducks! The males are the ones with the solid black portions, they look so menacing in the right angles. Meanwhile the females are adorable and apparently love posing for the camera!
I believe these are Mallards! The males have green heads that shine beautifully in the right light, the females are very different and blend into the water well!
I think this is called an American Coot! Really hard to photograph without it turning into a black blob, almost its entire body is pure black.
This little guy is a Common Gallinule, very similar to the one above being hard to photograph in detail, also very skittish as I couldn’t get close to these at all without them flying off.
This is a Striated Heron, not nearly as large as the heron earlier, but another interesting bird, I only saw this one the whole day!
Here are a couple extra ones I either couldn’t identify or just didn’t get a great photo of, the hummingbird was perched atop a branch waiting out the wind, the branch it was on was waving in the wind and I was a little worried it would fall off! The ducks are unlike others I’ve seen, maybe a mix of a few types of duck, very unique! Lastly is a little gopher I found at a resting point, only got one photo of him before he ran back into his hole.
These aren’t birds but just some interesting things I found along the way!
This is one of my favorite images entirely because you can almost feel the regret of the woman clinging onto the mountain, many tourists go to that mountain and attempt to reach the top, many realize its much steeper than it appears, and on a windy and cold day it definitely feels perilous! All made it safely down, but this moment of their mistake was captured forever!
